time for a change...
hmmm... so... i think i have some goodness in the works. hopefully i can finish things before school starts in a couple weeks, so i won't have to take time away from study time to fool around with this stuff (fat chance... i'm way too much of a procrastinator).
linux box set up, apache webserver running, dyndns address registered, port forwarding set on the router to get around isp 80 block, movable type, and gallery software downloaded.
changes are in store in the next few weeks.
side note/question... does anyone know how to get xp roaming profiles in samba to work with redirected folders and a network default user profile? my test user's start menu and desktop setting disappear after log out. profile directories are chmod 770 root.smbgrp. have a script that copies over settings on first login, and they do copy, but after logging out, desktop and start menu blanks. profileacls = yes.

doobie doobie doo
joes. how's it going. i can't believe that there's about 4.5 more weeks until i start classes again. i don't know about you, but summer's gone by way too fast. i've guess i've done a lot, but it really doesn't feel like i have... cause there's still so much to do. i've logged a bunch of miles travelling since may. however, my research is still in limbo as i wait for approval to transfer my grant money to a new product i'll be using. i haven't really worked all that much cause i've been in the lab/travelling. still need to get hardcore cracking on my pharmd and phd apps, as well as review some more for my gre's and pcat's which i will retake this fall. lastly... gotta figure out what schools i'll be applying to.
hmmm... new goings on... well... i applied for a grad assistant position. send good vibes if you've got any to spare please. it'd be nice to get free tuition, a stipend, and health insurance just for "working" 20 hours a week. of course it would mean that i'd have to pass on my mph for now if i do end up getting into a post-grad or pharmd program since i'd have to drop down to a more managable 14-16 credits in the fall and spring in order to commit 15 hours on weekdays to this GA position.
what else... oh i'm taking a pharmacogenomics/molecular biology workshop this week. it's been really interesting so far... met some cool people. however... i think the travelling has caught up with me... cause i am just way tired throughout the day.
i didn't take too many pics on my trip these last 2 weeks though... i probably should've. though i'll post the one's i have on
flickr sometime this week.
on friday i stayed out until a little past 3am-ish for
t.c.'s bday get together. i'm really getting too old for that. man... i remember in undergrad i'd be pulling all nighters left and right in order to write papers and do homework. now i struggle to stay up past midnight.
things that i must do before summer is over. the
lowest of the low are playing the canal concert series on aug. 5th. i thought these guys re-broke up again... but i guess they reformed casually. it's like a soap opera trying to keep up with them. then
sloan on the 24th @ thursday @ the square. give it up for 2 solid free concerts. if i make it to these 2... i'll have gone to 3 concerts this summer. i haven't done that since college!
so... with all the weddings i've been going to... i've been kind of thinking about the whole relationship thing a bunch. i haven't been in a serious one in a long long time. sometimes i think i'm way too cautious about things, and i make up rules to avoid getting into one. the last one didn't end so well, and well... it was hard to get over... but it's been a long time since that was over... and it really hasn't bothered me for awhile either. i think the thing is just getting to the point of allowing myself to let my guard down some and be open to possibilities and commitment again. i've noticed over the last 1.5-2 years or so... that there are a lot of great people that i'd like to meet/get to know. however, the trick is to find someone who's not in a relationship/married. it definitely gets harder when you get older. being in grad/professional school is a toss up. you meet some people who aren't attached... but many people are married to their education at this level... especially when it comes to research. i have found people that i'll click with, but not on all the "important" levels. obviously being physically attracted to someone is important... but physical attraction can be evolve from other things too i've found in the past. good musical taste is key. weird humor is another. i like laughing at random made up things. i like laughing at stupid and ridiculous things, and made up words. my sense of humor is still on a grade school level. i find the name honore de balzac funny. i like monty python. the person i'm with needs to be able to appreciate pointless humor that doesn't make sense. it'd also be nice to find someone who always wants to explore and know more about different topics. i'm not into the people who are way too focused on one thing... like most phd students doing their research/dissertation. i'd rather know/experience SOME stuff about many things, than to know EVERYTHING about one thing. life is too interesting to just concentrate on one thing. i guess most important thing is... that person has to actually like me... cause what i want doesn't mean anything until the other person is there. so... yeah... i haven't found anyone with all those qualities yet. i'm pretty sure i don't want to be the weird single 50 year old uncle... but what can i do but to wait and see what happens between now and ummmmm... 50.
anyways... so on that note... here's a question. workplace relationships... yay or nay? i've pretty much always been in the nay camp... it has the ability to make things very complicated. just interested in what my reader's think.
hope you have great wednesdays!

happiness is not a fish that you can catch
interesting
article about happiness, and how overall... we're not as happy as we think we would be due to our wal-mart consuming mentality. it also lets me clear out some old links i've been saving up, which is a good thing cause they've been piling up, and this article kind of ties things together =].
looks like voip will be
charged taxes by the fcc too. so even though voip allows better routing of calls on equipment that is less expensive, it gets charged a higher tax than pots and cellular? isn't the whole point of adopting new technology to decrease cost to consumer? no wonder people aren't happier with better tech.
here's
scott. here's
NOT scott. i don't get how you can actually prefer sitting in front of a tv, or computer to standing in the middle of yellowstone and watching a herd of bison graze. this one time i went camping a couple years ago and was walking along with some friends and stopped as a black bear and its cubs walked right in front of us. you can't appreciate a moment like that when you're sitting in front of your tv. why aren't people happier with better technology? this here is probably a big reason.
so we're not only ignoring nature, we are
killing it with our consumption habits... which i am guilty of as well.
What is the most shocking fact, aside from just the raw numbers, is the enormous volume of the stuff that we're getting rid of. In the United States, we seem to be disposing of about 250 million computers every year, and we only are currently recycling about 10 percent of that.
while i try and use some things, like my computers for as long as possible, other electronic gadgets i'm not so good at keeping, and sometimes they just get disposed. there are times when i look back and think... did i really have to spend $X on that to use it for 2-3 years? now that production has moved to places like china where the labor is cheap, and consumers are purchasing from stores like wal-mart to get even cheaper prices, the short term cost/item is next to nothing for the western world. however to estimate long term costs isn't as easy. what happens when landfills fill up with plastic that takes millions of years to degrade? when all the ground water is contaminated with heavy metals, and chemicals?
the
news from rivers cuomo is that weezer is "done." while i do enjoy their sound cause it's great summer driving music, it's unfortunate that they never were allowed to depart from their style too much. after all they were punished for making pinkerton (which is a great album btw).
have good wednesdays everyone! back to nyc tomorrow for another weekend of festivities. don't forget to wish
tansal a happy bday tomorrow.

yo
hello. so... sometimes i've wanted to blog... and i'd just sit here and didn't think i could come up with anything interesting to write about... so i haven't blogged.
nothing much to stay still... but went to a wedding this weekend and served as groomsman... on a sunny humid summer day in north carolina with a tux on. had niagara falls running down my back as i was mentally telling the priest to hurry up before i passed out. on a swasnastic scale from 1-10 it was a 15. wedding was fun though... really happy for aaron and jenny. got to see some buff peeps.
here's a
funny link that tansal sent. poor kid...

memory will rust and erode into lists of all that you gave me: some matches, a blanket, this pain in my chest, the best parts of lonely

so today was a good day... i'll start off with the highlight... went to catch john k sampson and the weakerthans. man these guys are awesome in concert... i was in awe... again, they really rock out the places they play. there were some new songs that i really dug. i was also impressed with the town ballroom (former sphere entertainment complex)... it's spacious but not too big and very intimate.

today was also the taste of buffalo (there be a buffalo all chillin out in front of city hall). lots of people lots of good food. i was all "git in mah belly" austin powers style... i guess it was more fat bastard style. whatever... good weather, good food, and good music... what more could anyone want?
i'll post my pics on my
flickr stream tomorrow... right now i need to get to bed cause i have to work in a couple hours. have great mondays!

happy canada/independance day(s) to you!
so yah... it's been awhile since my last post. so i'd like to start out by wishing my canadian readers a belated happy canada day... and my US readers a belated happy 4th.
this weekend i went down to the city and helped my brother move into his new apartment in the flatbush section of brooklyn from harlem in manhattan. this puts him about 2 blocks away from his med school/hospital which is convenient now that he's starting his rotations. i don't know how he's been able to commute 1.5-2 hours one way to school these last 2 years... but he's been doing it. so... the fam and i went for a visit and helped him move in. he's got a really spacious and nice studio... though the neighborhood's kind of rough. it's ok though... the people in the building are nice, the super's great, and overall i think there's a strong sense of community... and people look out for each other.
though i didn't have that much free time... i did end up getting to see some people and hitting up coney island for some nathan's and took a turn on the cyclone rollercoaster (you seriously need to ride this thing if you've never done it... you will pee yourself because you're scared because it's old and feels like it's going to fall apart and/or having so much fun). this was on saturday... and so unfortunately i didn't get to see
kobayashi win his 6th title today.

i also got to do one of my fav things and grabbed dinner @ grimaldi's and walked over the brooklyn bridge.

aside from the fact that it was way too hot... it was a really good weekend. can't beat good peeps and good food. i'm exhausted. night.
